- Lydia has very blonde peach fuzz all over her shoulders. The NICU nurse taking care of her called her "The Vanilla Gorilla."
- She has hairy ears! I love it!!
- Two days after she was born, we had our first multi-diaper change. I took her dirty diaper off and put a clean diaper under her, then started to put some Desitin on her when she started pooping again. Bryant and I laughed and waited until she was done, then cleaned her off and put a new diaper under her. And she did it AGAIN. Bryant ran to grab a bag to put the rapidly accumulating diapers into while I cleaned her off again. This time, instead of putting a new diaper under her, I turned the dirty one around so she was on the clean part of it while I finished cleaning her. I got out a new diaper and unfolded it, then set it down to grab the Desitin. Bryant came back in and said, "Did she poop again?" Just as I was responding with a no, she started to pee. Like a fountain. It arched up in the air and landed on the clean diaper (she has some good aim!), which I had to pick up to prevent the pee from running out. It was pooling in the diaper as she kept going and going and Bryant and I laughed helplessly until she finally stopped. Then we put a clean diaper on her and this time she left it clean. That's 4 dirty diapers in less than 5 minutes. Since then, I've discovered that she tends to save everything up and spend about half an hour cleaning out her system. I call it cluster pooping.
- When Bryant left (3 days after her birth), I handled it with even less grace than the last time he left. The crying started about two hours before we even left for the airport. Bryant kept it together, but I just cried and cried. I blame the postpartum hormones this time.
Leaving the hospital
Making silly faces!
- After Bryant left, I had two sleepless nights wherein my adorable little pumpkin refused to sleep between the hours of 10 pm and 3 am. Like, at all. She didn't cry, but she made fussy, grunting noises that kept both of us awake and she cluster fed like CRAZY. After the second night I declared we were never doing that again and I put her on a schedule. By that I mean I feed her when she woke up at 8, then feed her every three hours (waking her up from naps if necessary) all day long. Ever since then she has slept from 10 pm to 8 am with two middle of the night feedings. How lucky am I, huh? Best. Baby. Ever.
- Speaking of best baby, she also hardly ever cries. That might be because I feed her every three hours and so she doesn't have time to get hungry in between, but even in the middle of the night it's not crying that wakes me up, it's her little grunting, fussy noises. She's just a very quiet little girl.
- Lydia has made it clear, however, that she HATES sponge baths. She got a total of two sponge baths in the two weeks it took for her umbilical cord to fall off. And one of them was at the hospital a few hours after she was born. When I finally attempted to give her a sponge bath the week after her birth, my mother came running from upstairs because she thought something terrible had happened. That's how loud Lydia was screaming.
- I had my first "terrible mom moment" when she was about four weeks old. I was at Bryant's parents' house and Lydia was fussy and having a hard time falling asleep in a new place. It was about 11:30 and she could not quiet down and fall asleep. I finally picked her up and held her on my chest while I was laying on the bed to quiet her down. FYI it's a really bad plan to hold your baby when you're really tired. I fell asleep and around 1:30 in the morning I must have moved because Lydia fell off the bed. I don't think I'll ever be able to forget the sound of her hitting the ground. She only cried for about 30 seconds or so (I think she was more scared than hurt), but I cried much longer. I didn't sleep the rest of the night because I was watching her to make sure she was ok. I cried on and off the whole next day because I was overly tired and I was convinced that she was bleeding into her brain and would die. Then I was holding her while walking around and I bumped her head on a door frame. Mom of the year moment #2. However, it ended up being a blessing in disguise because she cried longer from that and had a visible red mark on her head (she had no marks after falling off the bed), so I was finally reassured that she wasn't seriously hurt from the fall.
- We Skype with Bryant every day and Lydia adores her daddy. Or she just really likes using technology. Either way, she gets very talkative and squirmy and smiley when he's on Skype. It's so adorable! Bryant can't bring himself to hang up when he's talking to her, so I have to do it every time.
- Lydia started smiling a week ago or so and I love it!!
- I'm taking a picture of Lydia with Bryant's old teddy bear, Snuggles, every week so he can see how she's growing:
Week One. I forgot to grab Snuggles the first week, so we took a picture with the BYU monkey instead.
Week Two. I included both the BYU monkey and Snuggles so I could transition over to just Snuggles.
Week Three.
Week Four.
Week Five.
- Here she is in the onesie Bryant and I used to announce our pregnancy to our families:
Also, how adorable is that face?!
- The Monday after Lydia was born, she got the chance to meet her Great-Grandpa Gotberg. He had been going downhill for a while and I decided I wanted to take her over. He was pretty comatose, but I held her up next to him so he could see her and I swear she smiled a little bit. He passed away just a few hours later and I'm so grateful she got the chance to "meet" him before he died.
- Lydia loves taking walks! Well, I guess I should say that I like taking walks and bringing her along in the stroller.
We went on a walk in the evening with Lydia's cousins to look at Christmas lights. Keagan here started trying to trick-or-treat because the lights were on outside the houses and he was told he could only trick-or-treat at houses with lights on.
- We call this Lydia's "squish face." It's adorable and she makes it every time I burp her!
- And now, a bunch of my favorite pictures of my favorite girl!
I love this snuggle bug!
Grandma Gotberg got her this dress. And she obviously loves it!
Napping with Aunt Aubrey.
She likes real baths much better than sponge baths.
She has started rolling onto her side when I lay her down on her back.
Tummy time is not her favorite, but I can't get enough of her cute little face when she's on her stomach!
